What We Fund

The Navigation Fund offers grants to high-impact organizations and projects in the following areas: Open Science, Farm Animal Welfare, Transforming Criminal Justice, Safe AI, and Climate Change.

We provide funding to a wide range of entities, including fiscally sponsored projects and international charitable organizations. We offer both general operating support and project-specific funding. You can read more about our funding strategies for each program area by clicking on the links above.

Our Approach to Funding

Thoughtful and strategic work is needed to yield transformative change in our cause areas. We aim to balance the long-term value of capacity building and the pressing need for bold action.

Principles

In Practice

Funding must be used strategically to maximize impact.

We seek to fill funding gaps in our issue areas, prioritizing capacity building and ambitious ideas that would be severely limited without our involvement. Each program page contains our strategy to achieve this and will be updated as our knowledge and issue areas progress.

Not every project will succeed, nor will the impact always be easy to measure.

We support innovation and have a large appetite for well-planned risk. We know that ambitious bets don’t always succeed, and we value the lessons learned from unsuccessful ventures.

Time is a scarce resource and should be respected.

We strive to build streamlined processes and default to invitation-only funding cycles because we know that an open-call approach will result in hundreds – or even thousands – of wasted application hours by organizations or projects we cannot fund. That’s time they can better spend on their important work.

Funding is important, but it’s not the only support we can provide.

We view ourselves as partners in this work and support our issue-area communities by building connections, sharing resources, and facilitating collaboration.

Our communities are constantly evolving, and we are constantly learning.

We recognize there are gaps in our knowledge—new organizations are formed, strategies change, and talents develop. We're eager to learn from our communities, and form new connections via our Introduce Yourself forms.
